About The Competiton

The 2024 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Western Art Contest is open to high school students currently enrolled in one of the 183 eligible school districts, as well as those attending a private school or homeschooled in one on of the 54 eligible counties. The lists of eligible school districts and counties can be downloaded below. The Western Art Contest is held annually in early December. This year the students whose entries are judged as champions in their division at the contest will be eligible for a total of $125,000 in college scholarships (certain restrictions apply). Important Dates

Please note the following dates for this year’s Western Art Competition, held in the Auction Barn (located on Freeman Boulevard, at the Freeman Coliseum/Frost Bank Center grounds):

Wednesday, November 15, 2023 –Deadline for online Western Art Competition Entry Form
Friday, December 1, 2023 -Check-In: All artwork must be dropped off between Noon to 7 P.M.
Saturday, December 2, 2023 -Judging: Restricted to S.A.L.E. and Judging team
Sunday, December 3, 2023

1:30 P.M. - Mentor meeting for Top 12 students and parents
2:00 p.m.- 3:30 P.M. – Scholarship Presentation Program and Reception for students, parents, teachers, family, and friends to view all entries and scholarship awards presentation.
3:30 P.M. - Check-out: Artwork not judged in Top 12 will be returned to teachers and students at this time.

Students and their teachers will be notified by phone on the evening of December 2 if artwork is one of the Top 12. Ensure contact information under online Western Art Competition Entry Form is complete and accurate.

Art Angels

The Art Angels were formed in 2010 by the Western Art Committee to support the scholarship program. Each year the Western Art Committee holds the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Western Art Contest. Through membership donations, the Art Angels raise funds to help support the scholarships provided each year to high school students whose entries are judged Top 12 in the contest. By joining together, the Art Angels become a Western Art Donor entitled to receive a piece of winning artwork from the contest. The Art Angels will hold a drawing after the end of the end of the Rodeo allowing one of their members an opportunity to win this artwork. For each $60 donation, a member gets one entry in the drawing.
