Calf Roping

What is Calf Roping?

1 of 3
Calf roping, also known as tie-down roping, is a timed rodeo event that tests a competitor’s horsemanship, speed and roping ability. The event begins when the calf is given a head start and the horse and rider give chase. The competitor ropes the calf, dismounts, flanks the calf and ties three of its legs together using a piggin’ string. Once the tie is complete, the competitor throws their hands in the air to stop the clock. The calf must remain tied for the required amount of time for the run to qualify. The competitor with the fastest qualified time wins the event.
