About the NCHA Cutting

Cutting is one of the most exciting horse sports to watch, and the Horse Show hosts a top-notch competition approved by the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA). In competition, horse and rider must work as a team selecting, or “cutting” individual heifers out of the herd and demonstrating their ability to keep it from returning to the group. Horses must react with very little direction or instruction from the rider to receive top scores. The horse’s lightning-fast, smooth maneuvers are breathtaking and awe-inspiring to observe. Years of careful training are invested in each horse, fine-tuning the natural instincts that selective breeding has instilled. This is one of the most exciting events for rider, horse, and spectator.

About the Barrel Race

Barrel Racing contestants compete against the clock to run a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels. The horse and rider are allowed a running start and time is recorded by a highly accurate electronic eye. The contestant may begin on the left or the right side; however, the contestant is disqualified if he/she turns incorrectly around a barrel. Touching a barrel is permitted, however knocking over a barrel results in a five second penalty.

A good Barrel Racing horse must possess not only speed and agility, but also a good temperament and a big heart. American Quarter Horses are often favored for this event because of their ability to sprint short distances and turn on a dime. American Paint Horses, Appaloosas, and Pintos are also popular mounts. The majority of contestants in barrel racing are women, but quite a few male competitors have also made their mark in the world of barrel racing.

2017 Barrel Racers can enter the Paint Barrel Racing Incentive Program (PBRIP) sidepot for a chance at an additional jackpot with $500 in added money. Click here for PBRIP rules. Exhibitors must pre-enter the Open 5D Barrel Race, then submit a PBRIP entry form (below) upon arrival.

About the Team Penning

Team Penning began as a demonstration of ranching skills, and quickly became a popular competitive event. Quick horses, determined riders, and a touch of luck are the main components of a winning team in this sport. Cattle are numbered in groups of three, and each team (consisting of three riders) draws a number. The team then has sixty seconds to cut their three designated cattle out of the herd, drive them down the arena, and confine them in a pen.

Team Penning is a fast-paced and exciting event which always draws a large, enthusiastic crowd. Times of the winning teams are often separated only by fractions of a second. It is one of the fastest growing equine sports, attracting professional riders and trainers, as well as weekend enthusiasts.

Big Things Are Happening

The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo holds its Horse Show events in the Expo Hall, which opened in 2010. The Expo Hall totals 315,900 sq. ft., of which 180,900 sq. ft. is climate controlled. The building also features:

  • A competition arena measuring 125 feet wide by 300 feet long
  • 126 prime commercial exhibit spaces
  • Climate controlled warm-up arena and show arena
  • 1,500 spectator seats
  • Approximately 750 new stalls
  • Indoor wash racks
  • Improved unloading areas for trailers

The project was built in two phases. Phase I was made possible through a joint effort between the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, Inc. and the Bexar County Community Arenas Board. This phase consists of a 113,400 sq. ft. multi-use, climate controlled building which serves as the Horse Show Arena.

Phase II of the construction project, which was funded by the Bexar County "venue tax" bond that was passed in 2008, includes a 67,500 sq. ft. addition to the multi-use building that includes a warm-up arena and a 145,000 sq. ft stall barn.
