The Western Art Contest and Exhibit was created to recognize and reward the many outstanding student artists interested in western art. The program began in 1996.  The contest occurs in December and entries are displayed during the annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. 

The annual Western Art Contest & Auction will take place the final Sunday of the Stock Show & Rodeo in the New Frontier Club located on the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo grounds. The Western Art Auction is held to auction the top 25 placing art entries from December's art contest. The top pieces will be auctioned to the highest bidder resulting in scholarships for the student artists. In addition, selected students are invited to participate in a three week Western Art Academy program at Schreiner University.
